Good intentions and good awareness
I think there are two components to being good.
Good intentions are not enough. The other is clarity/awareness.
Intention: what is it we are trying to do. Are we acting out of love and a desire to do good? We have a responsibility to act out of good intention.
Clarity and awareness. Do we understand the consequences of our actions? How the world works? What is really needed? Learning and observing more to gain this understanding is a perpetual endeavor.
(Of course, the two combine: clarity and awareness about our own intentions, which requires reflection.)
So we don't need to just ask: "did I have good intentions?" We also must ask "Have I done what I can to understand the world and the impact of my actions?"
